What is hallux valgus?

Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive deformity of the big toe joint. The toe shifts toward the second toe, forming a painful bony bump on the inside of the foot. This condition is often hereditary and more frequent in women.

Symptoms of hallux valgus

  • Bony bump at the base of the big toe
  • Redness, swelling, or pain when walking
  • Shoe friction
  • Gradual foot deformation
  • Secondary corns or calluses

Common causes

  • Hereditary factors
  • Tight or high-heeled shoes
  • Biomechanical imbalances (flat feet, instability)
  • Arthritis or ligament laxity
  • Sports with high forefoot pressure

Risks and complications

  • Chronic pain while walking
  • Skin irritation, inflammation, or bursitis
  • Deformation of neighboring toes (hammer toes)
  • Loss of mobility in the joint
