What is hallux valgus?
Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive deformity of the big toe joint. The toe shifts toward the second toe, forming a painful bony bump on the inside of the foot. This condition is often hereditary and more frequent in women.
Symptoms of hallux valgus

- Redness, swelling, or pain when walking
- Shoe friction
- Gradual foot deformation
- Secondary corns or calluses
Common causes
- Hereditary factors
- Tight or high-heeled shoes
- Biomechanical imbalances (flat feet, instability)
- Arthritis or ligament laxity
- Sports with high forefoot pressure
Risks and complications
- Chronic pain while walking
- Skin irritation, inflammation, or bursitis
- Deformation of neighboring toes (hammer toes)
- Loss of mobility in the joint
