What is athlete’s foot?
Also known as tinea pedis, athlete’s foot is a superficial fungal infection of the foot skin caused by dermatophytes. Very common and contagious, it usually affects the spaces between the toes, but can spread to the soles or sides of the feet.
Symptoms
- Intense itching between the toes
- Redness, cracks, or fissures in the skin
- Peeling or flaking skin
- Bad odor
- Possible blisters or oozing
- Burning or discomfort when walking
Causes and risk factors
Athlete’s foot thrives in warm, humid environments. Common causes include:
- Wearing closed shoes for long periods
- Excessive sweating
- Walking barefoot in public spaces (showers, pools, locker rooms)
- Sharing towels or shoes
- Inadequate hygiene or poor drying between toes
Are plantar warts contagious?
Yes. Athlete’s foot spreads easily via direct or indirect contact (floors, socks, shoes, mats). It can also spread to other body parts or other people.
