The 3 Criteria for a Good Shoe: Comfort, Support, and Stability

Your shoes have a direct impact on the health of your feet, knees, and even your spine. Poor footwear can worsen existing problems—or create new ones.

For most patients we see with foot issues, here are the 3 essential shoe features we recommend (though some may need custom advice):

  1. Heel-to-Toe Drop : A slightly elevated heel (vs. the forefoot) promotes better alignment and reduces strain on the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. Avoid shoes that are completely flat.
  2. Laces or Adjustable Closures : Well-tied shoes offer foot stability and prevent internal sliding that can lead to blisters or friction injuries.
  3. Firm but Cushioned Sole : A good shoe should resist twisting but still absorb shocks effectively. This protects joints and stabilizes your gait.

Brands like Hoka, New Balance, Asics, Saucony, and Brooks often meet these criteria—but always try shoes on to make sure they fit your feet.
